Corporate Management Team

Bill Ireland – Executive Chairman and Managing Director
Bill has a background in stockbroking and property. He worked with various Australian broking houses during the 1970s and moved into property in the early 1980s, before establishing the financial services group Challenger International in 1986. As Managing Director of that company, he was instrumental in developing the foundations of the group, which listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in October 1987. Bill stepped out of Challenger in 2003 and established the Mariner Financial group. He is the Managing Director of Mariner Financial Limited and became Chairman in May 2006.
Brent Cubis – Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer

Prior to his appointment in April 2007, Brent was the CFO for Nine Network Australia for four years and before that worked at PBL’s sister company, ACP Magazines for two years. Brent has over 20 years experience in senior financial roles across a broad range of industries, where he has managed finance teams that have assisted the earnings drive and business growth for the following leading Australian companies and industries: Media (Publishing and Broadcasting Limited); Funds Management (Bankers Trust); Property (Westfield Holdings); Hospitality (Sheraton Hotels). Brent qualified as a chartered accountant with Deloitte Haskins and Sells, Sydney after a transfer to their New York and Michigan offices.
Robert Molinari – General Counsel and Company Secretary

Robert has extensive experience in advising listed public companies, investment banks, fund managers and life companies and in structuring property transactions both in Australia and overseas. Prior to joining Mariner in September 2003, he was General Counsel for Challenger International Limited where he provided advice on the legal aspect of the entire range of Challenger products, including property trusts, share funds, superannuation funds, annuities and derivatives. Prior to Challenger, Robert practised as a solicitor with leading law firms and as a barrister at the NSW Bar.
Debbie Lynch, General Manager, Finance
Prior to her appointment at Mariner Financial Limited in July 2007, Debbie had risen to the role of Director, International Finance at Allco Finance Group. Debbie was with Allco for 18 years during which time she was promoted to a number of senior positions including Group Financial Controller for six years.
Debbie’s experience spans mergers and acquisitions, public and private fund raising, banking, complex tax structuring (both domestic and international), establishing international offices, systems implementation, risk management and overseas banking units.
Debbie brings to her role strong experience in Financial Control, Taxation, Compliance, Project Management & Process Engineering and Team Leadership.
Greg Masters – General Manager,
Product and
Client Services
Greg has over 18 years experience in financial services at both strategic and operational levels gained from corporate trusteeship, global custody and various high profile investment managers. He has vast experience in investment control, product development, fund accounting, relationship management and registry administration.
Greg joined Mariner Financial in September 2003 to establish all operational systems, procedures and business rules for the company. He now has responsibility for the relationship management with research houses and investment platforms as well as overseeing all operations, including administration and client services.
Renna Kats – General Manager, Human Resources
Diploma in HR (Sydney TAFE), Accredited Coach, IEC, MIAM
Renna is a strategically focused generalist human resources professional, with over 15 years experience in the corporate arena.
Before joining Mariner Financial, Renna was the head of HR for Copyright Agency Ltd, a not for profit private company, for five years, working with senior management as a change agent. Prior to this she was the Head of HR for Challenger Financial Services for four years, where she was responsible for establishing HR processes and aligning them with business objectives.
Executive Partners

Jeff Miller – Director
Jeff lends his considerable experience in US property research, acquisitions, investment strategy and finance structuring as head of the Mariner Financial group US office based in Boston, Massachusetts.
Jeff was Acquisitions Director of CB Richard Ellis Investors, an institutional investment adviser, and then Director US Property Operations of Challenger Financial Services Group, before establishing the Mariner Financial group’s US operation in December 2004.
Notable achievements in Jeff’s career include closing the acquisition of 50 Milk Street, Boston for US$109.3 million in 2002 and the Invesco Funds Corporate Campus in Denver Tech Center for US$57.8 million in 2003.
James Patterson – Director
Jim brings 35 years of expertise in property asset management, acquisitions and financial services to Mariner Financial Inc. and assumes CFO responsibilities for that company.
Before joining Mariner Financial Inc., Jim was responsible for the asset and portfolio management of Challenger Financial Services’ US$250 million commercial property portfolio.
Jim has held many senior management appointments including Executive Vice President and Chief Investment Officer and Board Member at John Hancock Properties, Managing Director and Head of Boston Office of CB Richard Ellis Investors and Managing Director, Board Member of Sun Capital Advisors, a subsidiary of Sun Life of Canada.
Mike Shaw – Managing Director, Mariner Land Limited

Mike has over 25 years experience in the real estate, development and construction industry with contractual and overall management responsibility for multi-million dollar projects in Europe, Middle East, USA and the Far East. Projects in which he has been involved include Canary Wharf (London), Euro Disney (Paris), and the Petronas Towers (Kuala Lumpur).
He heads up Mariner Land Limited which was set up to secure investment opportunities in land, development and under utilised assets. He established the Mariner Coastal Land Fund in Yamba and is working on the re-zoning of a major land holding in Goulburn, NSW.
Prior to joining Mariner, as Head of Development for the James Fielding Group, he was responsible for a number of major projects such as:
- Sydney Basin Airports (Bankstown, Hoxton Park and Camden), NSW
- Holden Headquarters, Melbourne
- Orion Town Centre, Springfield, Queensland
- Education City, Springfield, Queensland
He has held positions as a Director of Bovis Asia Pacific, Bovis Australia and subsequently James Fielding Developments Pty Limited and James Fielding Property Services Pty Limited.
Scott Marinchek – Head of Mariner Third-Age Retirement Living

Scott manages the Mariner Third-Age Retirement Living business division.
Scott has over 23 years experience in investment banking, private equity, risk management, bioscience and strategic consulting. Scott has held senior management and corporate governance roles in North America, Europe and Asia with Citigroup, Credit Suisse First Boston, Merrill Lynch, Salomon Brothers and Zurich Financial Services.
Scott commenced his Wall Street career at the Phibro commodities unit of Salomon Brothers before joining the original CSFP team to head global commodity risk management. At Merrill Lynch, he developed institutional and private client investment products before moving to Australia to establish a corporate and private equity advisory practice and subsequently launch Zurich Capital Markets Asia.
Greg Story - Executive Partner, Energy and Infrastructure
Greg has experience in the funds management of infrastructure assets including:
- Sourcing, structuring and financing investments.
- The operational management of utility and infrastructure investments.
- Deriving greater efficiencies and unregulated revenues from the investments.
- Developing tax effective financing structures.
At Mariner, Greg is focusing on acquiring medium size infrastructure assets particularly in energy production. Currently he is establishing a renewable energy fund to acquire renewable energy assets in Australia and oversees particularly the EU.
Prior to joining Mariner, Greg worked in the energy sectors with ETSA,
Powercor Australia Limited and Citipower Pty, all majority owned by the Cheung Kong Group which also owns Cheung Kong Infrastructure Holdings Limited (CKI), Hutchison Whampoa Limited, Hongkong Electric Holdings Limited and Hutchison Telecommunications.
John Thomas – CEO, Mariner Mortgage Trust

John has been involved in banking and finance activities for over 30 years. Joining the Howard Group in 1987, he managed the Howard Mortgage Trust when its assets were $8 million. When Challenger International acquired the Howard Group in 1997, John continued his role within management of the Howard Mortgage Trust. By the time John left Challenger in May 2003, the assets of the Trust had risen to $2.6 billion.
John was involved in all facets of the operation of the Mortgage Trust and brings much expertise to Mariner, most particularly on the asset management side of the ledger. He also set up the Howard Property Trust Division in 1996 and successfully bought and managed a number of large commercial properties.
John is responsible for the management of the Mariner Mortgage Trust.
